What RugDrop does

  • Nothing is deleted

    Swept items move into a hidden folder called Under the Rug, inside the folder they came from. They never leave their drive and are never copied.

  • Lift to look

    Double-click the rug, or pull a corner back, to look under it. Drag an item out, or double-click it, to put it back.

  • Undo and restore

    Restore all, undo the last sweep, or open the hidden folder from the tray or the menu bar.

  • Eight rugs

    Qarabağ, Quba, Şirvan, Qazax and Gəncə, after the carpet weaving schools of Azerbaijan, a Persian medallion rug, a flat-woven kilim and Graphite, a modern rug with carved lines. Each comes in three sizes, lying across or upright.

  • Safe with open files

    A file that is open in another app stays where it is, with a short note that says why.

How it works

    Install RugDrop. The rug appears on your desktop, under your windows.

  2. 2

    Drag files or folders onto the rug. They slide under the nearest corner.

  3. 3

    Double-click the rug or pull a corner back to see them, and drag one out to put it back.

Questions

Where do my files go?

Into a hidden folder named Under the Rug, inside the folder they came from. Lift the rug to see them, or open the hidden folder from the tray. Restore puts each one back where it was.

Can it lose a file?

RugDrop never deletes or copies anything. It only renames items into the hidden folder and back, on the same drive. If something cannot be moved safely, it stays where it is.

Does it work with OneDrive, iCloud or a network desktop?

Yes. The hidden folder is made inside the same folder as the files, so they stay in the same synced or network folder.

What if I remove the app?

On Windows, uninstalling makes every Under the Rug folder visible again. On a Mac, choose Restore all before you delete the app. If you forget, the files are still in the hidden Under the Rug folder: press Command, Shift and period in Finder to show it.

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay once and keep it. Use it on all of your own computers, and every 1.x update is free.

Windows or macOS warns me when I install it.

RugDrop comes from an independent developer and is not code-signed or notarized yet. On Windows, click More info, then Run anyway. On a Mac, open System Settings, Privacy and Security, and click Open Anyway.
